Viltrox, a camera equipment company from China, recently launched their newest lens product, the AF 85mm f/1.8 lens. This AF 85mm f/1.8 lens is here for the Canon RF mount. Viltrox makes it the first lens the company produces for Canon mirrorless cameras to feature AF (autofocus).
Design
In terms of design, Viltrox mentions the AF 85mm f/1.8 as a lightweight and compact lens without sacrificing performance. It measures less than 10 cm in length and weighs only 530 grams without the lens cap and hood. Viltrox claims that its new lens has excellent AF performance for photo and video purposes.
This lens is designed for use on Canon full-frame mirrorless cameras and is made of 10 elements in 7 groups, which includes 4 short-wavelength and highly transparent elements and 1 extra-low dispersion (ED) element. Viltrox says this set of elements reduces chromatic aberration and achieves high sharpness and accurate colour.
There’s also the use of an HD Nano multi-layer coating which the company says can reduce flare and ghosting while increasing contrast. This coating also makes lenses splash-proof and helps protect exposed glass surfaces from moisture.
The 85mm f/1.8 features an aperture range of f/1.8 to f/16 via a 9-blade aperture diaphragm. And this 85mm f/1.8 lens has a minimum focusing distance of 80 cm, and the front filter size is 72 mm.

For performance, the Viltrox lens uses a stepping motor (STM) for autofocus, and the company claims it’s fast enough to easily detect and track subjects, including when using Eye AF. The STM motor is also known for its near-silent operation. It can provide high enough performance for video recording.
The lens is also equipped with a USB-C input port on the back, allowing it to be connected to a computer for future firmware updates. Viltrox is compatible with Canon EOS R, EOS RP, EOS R3, EOS R5, EOS R6, and EOS C70 cameras. As for the price, the AF 85mm f/1.8 lens retails for $400.
